Population in Yakutia

In emails I am constantly asked about nationalities living in Yakutia. Further, please,  find demographic info.

The population is approx. 950 thousand people. Every year this stat is altered. Thanks to migration, birth and death factors.

There are 120 nationalities in the Republic, including the indigenous peoples of the North – Evens, Evenks, Yukagirs, Dolgans, and Chukchis. Sakha (45 percent) and Russians (41 percent) make most of the population.

The Sakha people historically live in the region’s central parts, prefer valleys along rivers. Russians tend to inhabit in industrylized regions, where minerals are mined, for instants, in Aldansky, Mirny, Nerungrinsky, etc.

The demographic situation is characterized by a stable yearly excess of birth rate over the death rate. In 2006 natural growth exceeded negative balance of migration and the absolute population of the Republic has increased for the first time in the last 15 years.

One of the peculiarities of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) is a historically considerable share of rural population in the total number of inhabitants (37 percent, compared with 8 percent average in other northern region of Russia).
