Where is the famous Lake Labynkyr with monsters?

October 18, 2008

Actually, Lake Labynkyr is easy to find but hard to reach. Visit maps.google.com and here you are.

You may just (1) type “Lanbynkyr Lake” in the search box or (2) follow the link http://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&hl=ru&ll=62.466646,143.591309&spn=2.641495,14.0625&z=7

If you choose the first option mentioned above, you can see even the 105-km roadpath leading to the lake from the old Kolyma road (Tomtor). If the second, browse the vast map switching between ‘map’, ‘sattelite’ or ‘terrain’ versions and see something like illustrated below.

A journey to Lake Labynkyr is very exciting for several reasons.

- You go by the Kolyma road that starts in Khandyga, if to drive from Yakutsk.
- You see the Verkhoyansk Range that follows after Khandyga.
- You visit the Pole of Cold, Oymyakon that is the coldest village in the northern hemisphere.
- You go through real harsh terrains on the way to Labynkyr from Tomtor. 105 km to go to the south.
- Finally, you have opportunity to check if local legends about lake monsters are true. And don’t say I didn’t warn you of others. Keep your eyes always open :)

Tips to remember: Never go alone, support and a guide are required, and be aware of wild animals, especially brown bears.
