PROFILE: Vyacheslav A. Shtyrov, President of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia)
Born on May 23, 1953. In the village of Khandyga, the Tomponsky region, Yakutian ASSR*.
1975. Graduated from the Far-Eastern Polytechnic Institute with bachelor degree in civil engineering. Assigned to a job in the USSR Ministry of Energy’s GOKstroy VilyujGesStroi** Construction Administration. Since then, his biography has been relating to Yakutia.
1975 – 1986. Worked as a foreman, building plot #3 chief, deputy chief engineer, deputy production chief of GOKstroy VilyujGesStroi Construction Administration.
1986. Appointed the Deputy Manager of AyhalEnergoPromStroi of VilyujGesStroj of the USSR Ministry of Energy. Worked then as acting deputy chief engineer, production chief, the 1st Deputy Chief of VilyujGesStroj.
1986 – 1988. Worked as deputy head of construction department at the Yakutian Regional Committee of the CPSU.
1988 – 1991. Post-graduate study at the Academy of Social Sciences attached to the Central Committee of the CPSU. Defended the thesis for the degree “economic science candidate.”
1991. Appointed the Minister of Construction and Investment of the Yakutian-Sakha SSR.
Dec. 1991. Elected Vice-President of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).
1992 – 1996. Vice President of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), and Chairman of the Government of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).
1996 – 2002. President of ALROSA Closed Joint-Stock Company.
Dec. 1997 – Jan. 2002. Elected a deputy of the Legislative Assembly of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).
Jan. 13, 2002. Elected President of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).
Jan. 27, 2007. Appointed President of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) for a term of five years by the Decree of the Russian President.

** VilyujGesStroi stands for the enterprise that constructed the hydroelectric power station on the Vilyuj River.
