Driving from Moscow to Yakutsk

February 3, 2009

Received a request from a traveller of Croatia: “I am interesting about the road condition in the winter. I mean main road from Yakutsk to Moscow and Vladivostok. Are there any traffic? How about supply, trucks…? Is it possible to go from Moscow to Yakutsk by regular car or 4×4?”

My 1st answer:

The road condition between Moscow and Vladivostok is perfect. You may drive the road any time by any regular car without any problem. Traffic is intense.

If you plan to make turn to Yakutsk, you need to reach Skovorodino (Сковородино) after Chita (Чита) by Highway M55 and go then by Highway M56 to the north. Please, check the online map at http://map.yandex.ru/russia. Very detailed.

In late August – early September, when it is raining, you may be stuck for a while near Yakutsk, in the area of Kachikatzy (Качикатцы). That is the part with earth ground.

Reply:

Thank you for the information but I am interesting about road condition in the WINTER.
Is it posibble to go from Moscow to Vladivostok via Yakutsk in December- January?

My 2nd answer:

Roаd conditions аre perfect at this period. It is icy partly. Need to
use winter tires. Federal highways are always good and cared much.
Road policemen is what you need to worry. аll papers must be fine.

My other answers:

- So is not necessary to be an 4×4?
- Yes. But 4×4 looks more prestige and attracts much locals’ respect. Don’t know why. Maybe, it’s all about status.
- The traffic is also intense in the winter?
- Certainly. It is used all the around.
- In the winter on the road are only trucks or also passenger cars?
- Passengers cars also. Locals, however, prefer to travel short distances. But you’ll see many ordinary peoples’ car. Not so great amount as on the US highways, but many enough.

Sometimes it’s necessary to keep asking me so I could give the exact information the requester is eager to acquire.
