Received a message regarding this route from a UK backpacker, who wishes to travel the Road of Bones by a taxi. Here is what he wrote:
Firstly congratulations on your site! This is a truly amazing resource for visitors to Yakutia. Here we can obtain information that would otherwise be impossible to find!
Thanks! : ))
My question is regarding the long distance taxi services in Yakutia. You have given list of eastward destinations, including to Ust-Nera. I am aware that it is not in Yakutia, but do you know if it is possible to continue onward to Magadan? If so, how would you go about this, and do you have any idea of the cost? It will be in January or February. Yes, basically I’m looking to travel the Road of Bones!
And here is my reply:
Well, I did have the same question a few month ago and totally forgot to post it on the weblog. So I know the answer.
In the coldest part of winter, December-February, the passable road is Yakutsk – Kyubyume – Ust-Nera – Magadan. So through Ust-Nera only. The old route after Tomtor towards Magadan Oblast is not used at all and stay buried under the thick snow cover. Impossible to drive even for a 4WD vehicle.
Regarding taxi rates, if to go from Yakutsk, you need to reach Ust-Nera (~ 7000-7500 rubles) and then take another taxi to Magadan (~5000 rubles). That’s expensive, but cheaper in comparison with the 4WD vehicle rent rate, ~ 1000-1500 EUR, for the ride from Yakutsk to Magadan. Remember, car rent means that a car must be rented with a driver :)
