At my Flickr account I received a good question from an Australian user, tanetahi. In his comment to one of my first autumn pics he wrote:
Do people get depressed or complain much about the cold as you progress from summer to winter in Yakutsk, or is the severe climate just accepted as an inevitable part of life there?
My answer was “September and the early October are very depressive. No, we don’t complain about the upcoming cold. We just regret sunny summer days are over, and we have to prepare to the long winter.” That’s actually depressive.
Further, please, see the slideshow with Yakutsk autumn photos.
The following pictures we see almost everyday. No sun lights. Dull cloudy sky. High dampness. Puddles around. Partly muddy. It’s not autumn to enjoy… Btw, the album “Yakutsk/Autumn” will be updated regularly. I wish to show you how we, the people of the coldest Siberian region, meet the winter.
Below, please, see the pictures of my short trip to Pokrovsk, approx. 100 km south of Yakutsk. The photos were taken on September 8, 2009. The ride to Pokrovsk took about 45 minutes by a 4WD car. That day was lovely. Sunny and +15C at midday. That was the last day when we enjoyed warm weather and gold leaves on trees this year. After we started feeling cold.
So, when do we have the first snowfalls?
Usually it happens in the midst of October. But dates are flexible. Weather never asks our wishes. Remember, a few years ago I was very depressed, when snow started falling at the end of September. I was also very, very depressed, when I was stuck at the airport in Aldan in the early October of 2003. I couldn’t fly back to Yakutsk, because the runway was suddenly and totally buried under thick snow. By the way, it is the Aldansky region, South Yakutia, that meets the first flakes in the republic.
UPDATE: Sept 16, 2009, The first snowfall happened in southern Yakutia!!! That’s in Nerungri, Tommot, Aldan! It can mean one thing only. WINTER IS HERE!!! )))
In Yakutsk it is too chilly and muddy. I wish to have snow right now, because it would be warmer a little.
