Expedition

Yeah, I am pretty much happy to present the list of useful stuff to bring along while traveling on bikes across Russia’s Siberia and Far East. The list was compiled,  used  and provided by Czech motorcyclists Eva Krečová and Tomáš Holman (the FB fan page OFF Siberia … ОФФ Сибирь Project), who, by the way, made the old route of the Kolyma Highway / the Road of Bones to Magadan Oblast alone on one BMW G800 the last summer. Rejoyce, everyone, who wishes to try the Road of Bones to/from Magadan. Magadan is not the deadend. It is, actually, one of your enroute waypoints.

The only thing you need to know is how to ship your vehicle from/to Magadan by sea. The second thing to remember is that a Turkish driver Ali Eric (www.istanbul2instanbul.com) is really a good fellow. He sent me the precious information on the shipment from Magadan to Valadivostok (or vice-versa) and from Vlad to anywhere in North America.

Further, please, find the info about the shipping company, that helped Ali Eric and two UK moto adventurers Walter & Tony (www.SibirskyExtreme.com) to deliver their 4wd and motorcycles from Magadan to Vladivostok by sea. Read more…

Why is Oymyakon so cold?

September 20, 2009

Oymyakon in winter. Yakutia, Siberia/Russia. Photo by Bolot Bochkarev

I found this question in the list of keywords that have brought some traffic to my weblog, and I recalled Nick Middleton, an Oxford geography lecturer and the creator of the four-series TV show “Going to Extremes.” The first part, btw, depicted his travel to Oymyakon, the Pole of Cold. While staying in the village, he gave a detailed explanation of why the area in eastern Yakutia was able to keep the cold as low as -71.2 degrees Celsius (-96.16 degrees Fahrenheit). Read more…

Walter Colebatch, the UK Sibirsky Extreme moto adventure project leader, returned to Yakutia from Baikal. He said good bye to his fellows Tony and Terry, who went back home to England. At that moment, he thought “I still harboured a burning ambition to get to the Arctic Circle in Asia… I just had enough time before the seasons changed to try one more time to get North from Udachny.”

As two months ago, he hit the same route Ust-Kut – Lensk – Mirny – Chernyshevsky – Morkoka – Aikhal – Udachny and finally reached the place just a few kilometers before the Arctic Circle, the place that had stopped him and Tony last time round.

“The river then had been full of water, and rain was falling,” wrote Walter. “Now it was colder, but the sky was half blue. I approached the marker on my GPS that indicated the limit of our travels last time and took a photo. Now it was all dry road. Just 100 metres ahead there was the River … One look told me the river was 3-4 metre wide and at least 1 metre deep. I walked the shallowest part … My arse got cold and wet. That wont work on the bike, especially considering the current as well.”

Further, please, find more of Walter’s travelogue plus the scanned maps of the Anabar Road. Read more…

So… Two UK adventurous bikers of the Sibirsky Extreme travel motorcycle expedition have just ridden the Kolyma Highway. They had left Yakutsk on Thursday afternoon and arrived in Magadan on Sunday evening. 2100 km, 3.5 days, and 7 tyre changes! What did they say about the federal road?

The road was a little better than the Vilyuisky Trakt, but only a little better. There were still long gravelly sections, the odd sandy patch.

I received this question a year ago from Walter, the leader of the Sibirsky Extreme motorcycle expedition. Remember, I wrote to him an answer (check the post Khandyga – Yakutsk – Mirny – Lensk) and something like “Yes, it is possible to ride it through in summer.” Right at the moment two UK bikers of the project are travelling across Yakutia. Btw, spend last three days with them in Yakutsk. Now Walter has its own answer. Very sufficient. He made the ride from Mirny to Yakutsk successfully.

Here is his description: “So what of the Vilyuisky Trakt? – you certainly don’t need to be a hero to ride it. Read more…

Those, who is interested in travelling on the same route by bikes, might want to check the Sibirsky Extreme UK Bikers Expedition’s website Read more…

Received a message from the U.S.:

I think your website is a great service to travellers who are interested in visiting Yakutia! I have been to Yakutsk before and love the nature. After looking though the internet and your site I still have two questions that I couldn’t find answered. Both of them have to do with what kind of roads or passenger services exist.

What can I say? Thanks a lot for giving me a positive feedback. Appreciate it. So good to hear it from time to time. Think, maybe, it will be good to quote such feedbacks in the seperate page category :)

Another portion of questions arrived from a Brit solo rond-the-world motocyclist regarding the old part of the Kolyma Highway that runs from Kyubyume through Tomtor to the Magadan Oblast. Found out that the new way Kyubyume – Ust-Nera – the Magadan Oblast is less interesting to drive than the old one. The reason is as simple as the new roadway is itself. Right, if to go through Ust-Nera, travelers won’t experience any hardship and thus any adventure. This track is easy to drive at any time. But the old part is full of challenges. Read more…

Received a request from a traveller of Croatia: “I am interesting about the road condition in the winter. I mean main road from Yakutsk to Moscow and Vladivostok. Are there any traffic? How about supply, trucks…? Is it possible to go from Moscow to Yakutsk by regular car or 4×4?” Read more…
